As with any fire, time is of the essence— but EV and battery-related fires present unique challenges.
Electric vehicle (EV) fires, particularly those involving lithium-ion batteries, are most commonly triggered by overcharging. While modern EVs are equipped with a Battery Management System (BMS) designed to prevent this, failures can still occur. Over time, both the battery and its BMS may degrade or malfunction—potentially leading to a dangerous condition known as thermal runaway or melt.
In a thermal event, the battery undergoes a rapid and uncontrollable rise in temperature. Unlike traditional fires, this reaction does not require oxygen—allowing it to burn hotter, longer, and more intensely—making it much harder to extinguish.
The most effective method for stopping a lithium-ion battery fire is to fully submerge the battery in water. This not only cools the battery but also halts the chemical reaction, preventing re-ignition. It is on this principle that our HCS units were uniquely designed to drown hazardous events.
